School of Fine Woodwork

Sydney’s Oldest School of Fine Woodwork with Richard Crosland

Richard’s classes consist of many students, some with engineering or design backgrounds, and some with no previous experience in woodwork at all – but they all learn the craft of furniture making. Students can try it or stay on to design & make their own furniture, custom designed for their houses, presents for other people or pieces taken from existing designs on the net. It’s a collaboration.

Both Richard & Adam assist with purchasing timber, measurements, design, and hands-on help with machinery whenever they need it. Students work entirely at their own pace and make whatever items they choose. Whether it be classical or modern, furniture or objects, most projects are completed to a high degree of finish and professionalism that you see in these photographs.

A respected craftsman and teacher, Richard Crosland established the school nearly 40 years ago. In his fully equiped workshop in Gardeners Road Alexandria, he recommends the most practical methods for achieving quality results, maintaining a stimulating environment that fosters creativity and encourages ongoing satisfaction and progress.

Because the focus is on personal tuition, classes are limited to no more than eight people; the groups are mixed, the people varied, and the sessions generally good fun. Hence, his waiting list grows while some students have stayed with him for 20 years or more. Students attend weekly classes and all work in progress is stored at the workshop until completion. Fees cover a 3 hour class per week including timber & project storage. Please enquire via the Enquiries page or call Richard on 9313 4142.

The Industrial Estate is on the curve of Gardeners Road and Kent Rd, right next door to Beaurepairs on the same side as Bunnings, Alexandria. If on foot, it is a short walk from Mascot Train Station. There is free parking on the Industrial Estate, when you go through the double gate, just walk or drive straight through to the end of the complex, and the workshop is on your right. Please use Yellow Marked Visitor Parking.
